The Man Behind the Name
In the late 19th century, European vineyards were devastated by phylloxera, leading to widespread crop failures and economic hardship.
This agricultural crisis prompted significant emigration, as many sought livelihoods abroad.
Among them was Mihovil “Rizman” Mijo Popich, who left for America after his vineyards succumbed to these diseases.
In 1918, he returned to the Neretva Valley and replanted 8,000 vines. He transported his grapes to a tavern in Opuzen, where he made and sold his own wine with the help of his family.

In 2006, Rizman’s grandson Vlado Štimac, together with his sons Mihovil and Damir, carried forward the family’s winemaking legacy by planting new roots on the rugged slopes of what would become the Komarna wine region.
Today, the winery is led by the fifth generation: Rizman’s great-grandson, Damir Štimac, alongside his own family. In 2025, they will mark a meaningful milestone: 20 years since the founding of Rizman Winery.
